Why does my child wake up 20 mins after they fall asleep?

Does your baby/child fall asleep quickly, only to wake 20 mins later? ⠀

This is very common. This is a sign that your baby/child is overtired. When they are overtired, they release stress hormones, which can keep them from falling asleep and/or connecting their sleep cycles.⠀

The first step in helping them sleep, is learning what their sleep cues are. Sleep cues are signs your baby/child shows when they are tired:

  • red eyes⠀
  • yawning⠀
  • irritable⠀
  • rub their eyes⠀
  • eyes glaze over⠀
  • become quieter⠀
  • hard to distract⠀
  • less interactive⠀

Crying is not a sleep cue. It is a sign that they are overtired, and can make naps/bedtime harder.

Mamas if you're baby/child is struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep, put them to bed when they exhibit sleep cues. Do this consistently for every nap and bedtime, and soon you will notice that naps/bedtimes become easier and your baby/child sleeps longer.

Good luck, Mamas!
